 2004-05 Neon suspended from aluminum channel 9' x 13' x 9' (2.74m x 3.96m x 2.74m)
This is the latest piece in a series of large-scale sculptures in which the location of the viewer determines the imagery. Neon tubes are hung at different heights, depths and angles to produce a realistic image from a precise point of view. Seen from every other location, the piece appears as an abstract form of lines and shapes. The purpose is to encourage people to explore and to see and think about things in general, differently. My goal is not to describe an experience, but to create one. |
"Transit" was commissioned by the Chicago Transit Authority in 2004 in answer to an open call for a hanging sculpture to be located in the two story lobby of their new headquarters located at 567 West Lake Street in Chicago. The work consists of 22 neon tubes hung at specific points to produce an image of the Chicago subway/elevated train map when viewed from directly below. When seen from the second floor of the lobby facing west, the tubes are aligned to form a scene of an elevated train leaving a platform. When the viewer walks around the piece and faces north, a scene of a bus at a stop appears. The aluminum grid from which the neon hangs is a map of downtown bus routes and the different colors correspond the names of the train lines (the Red Line, Orange Line, Green Line, etc.) |
